Story Studio Workshops

Each year I offer daylong Saturday workshops exploring a theme through storytelling at the Story Studio in my home in Schenectady, NY.

Right off the NYS Thruway near Albany, the Story Studio is easy to get to and there's lots of free parking.

1999-2000 Story Saturday dates:

  • Oct. 16 TALES OF TEACHING AND LEARNING
  • Dec. 11 All KINDS OF HOLIDAY TALES
  • Jan. 22 STORIES OF LOSS AND LETTING GO
  • Mar. 11 TALES FOR THE IRISH IN YOU
  • May 6 STORIES OF THE MOTHER

Some who attend these Story Saturdays are tellers who bring a work in progress. Many participants are simply interested in the exploration the theme by way of folktales and memories.

Because we create a receptive space with our attentive listening, the stories come forth artfully, even first tellings.

Listeners and tellers alike marvel at this phenomenon. To me it proves that storytelling is not so much about talent, as about sharing the gifts of our hearts and letting our creativity flow.

Suggest a "Story Saturday" theme or better yet gather a group of your friends and bring me to your town to facilitate such a day. Our story sharings enrich our understandings.

STORIES OF LOSS AND LETTING GO
Tell the tales that keep "lost" loved ones alive in our hearts. Share tales about letting go of old scripts, closet junk, lost jobs and opportunities. In this workshop we'll use the tools of laughter, tears, art, movement, music, and community as we create stories spontaneously or share our works in progress.
STORIES OF THE MOTHER
Explore images of Mother: nurturer, critic, wise one, taskmaster, teacher, friend. We'll honor Mother Earth, the Madonna, the Goddess. Come alone or bring your mom, a daughter (age 10 and up), a sibling; bring photos, a permission slip to travel the universe, a hanky, or just an open heart.
TALES FOR THE IRISH IN YOU
Tellers and listeners of every ethnicity are invited to share and hear tales from the Emerald Isle or the experience of being Irish-American. Bring a ballad, a joke, your memories of Irish ancestors (factual or fictional). Any bit of the blarney welcome.
ALL KINDS OF HOLIDAY TALES
A celebration of the dark and light through Christmas, Hannukah, Solstice, and Kwanza tales. Bring a tale, a song, a ritual or a memory connected to how holidays once were or are currently shared in your home or community. Holiday food for the luncheon fare welcome too!
FINDING OUR VOICES!
Join sculptor Pam Golden from Marshfield, MA and Marni to explore this theme through tales, clay sculpture and ritual. We'll dare to share the thoughts we keep locked away and the tales we've always meant to tell. We may hoot and holler, chant and sing to clear a space for our most creative ventures.
TALES OF TEACHING AND LEARNING
Whether you've been a student in or out of school, you know from experience what it takes to learn. We'll share tales of the mentors, gatekeepers, encouragers and naysayers we've stumbled across on the path of life-long learning. Bring memories of triumphs, flubs, stars for good behavior and scoldings for bad. We'll share what we've learned about taking the role of teacher in everyday life.

Each Saturday workshop is $35 pre-paid, $40 at the door. Fee includes bagels and beverage (Irish soda bread in March) and a soup, salad and bread lunch.

Participants are encouraged (but not required) to bring photos or mementos to any workshop as a source for stories.
